In the News...

Today, the Washington Post published a complimentary review of this weekend's performance of Adriana Lecouvreur. Here's what critic Joe Banno had to say, verbatim:

Soprano Mary Elizabeth Williams and mezzo Elizabeth Bishop made a splendid pair of rivals in Washington Concert Opera's performance of Francesco Cilea's 1902 potboiler "Adriana Lecouvreur" at Lisner Auditorium on Sunday. Williams, as the grand, 18th-century actress of the title, and Bishop, as the Principessa di Bouillon -- Adriana's competition for the affections of the Saxon count, Maurizio -- both possess the richness and vibrancy of voice to really sell the blood-and-guts verismo style of Cilea's writing. Williams also produced a creamy tone on her softly sung phrases, some ravishingly floated high notes and an arresting chest voice that paid dividends in the spoken excerpts of classical plays that Adriana declaims at several points in the opera.

The performance was generally cast from strength in the other principal and supporting roles as well, not least the tenor role of Maurizio, which James Valenti delivered with virile, beautifully balanced tone and a sweetly ringing upper register. If his handsome voice felt a size too small in carrying power next to Williams's singing, it did evince the right Mediterranean passion. Veteran baritone Donnie Ray Albert was also a welcome presence as the lovelorn stage manager, Michonnet, with his voice a tad thinner of tone these days, but still rock-solid and expressive.

Cilea's alternately swooning, scintillating and thundering score does much to ennoble the overwrought claptrap of the opera's libretto. Conductor Antony Walker did it full justice, drawing playing of power and refinement from his pickup orchestra.

Congratulations to my fantastic colleagues and to the entire Washington Concert Opera company!

A.L. in D.C.

Hello!

My wonderful colleagues and I are hard at work preparing a concert version of Cilea's Adriana Lecouvreur to be performed with the Washington Concert Opera at the Lisner Auditorium on the campus of Geroge Washington University. We've been rehearsing this exciting (but not frequently performed) work all week; tonight was our first rehearsal with the orchestra--so now I'm REALLY excited about our performance!

I am especially enjoying working again with Betsey Bishop, with whom I had the pleasure of working last season at Atlanta Opera in Aida. It's always nice to make new music with old friends.

Everybody sounds great (if I do say so myself), and I think it's going to be a fantastic show. If you're in the DC area, drop in and see us on Sunday afternoon!

Checking in after Bologna...

Hello!

I can't believe it's already October! I guess I must be having fun, because time sure is flying...

In September, I spent two weeks studying and singing in Bologna, Italy at the Scuola dell'Opera Italiana. I spent four hours every day studying Italian language, diction, and musical style. It was a wonderful (if exhausting) time, and I really feel enriched for the experience.

Needless to say, I am now on a strict carb-cutting diet, to make up for the indiscrimiate pasta-eating I did while in Italy...

I am also happy to report that as a result of my time in Bologna, I am now collaborating with Raffaella Coletti of Raffaella Coletti Artists Management, based in Firenze, Italy.

I feel so fortunate to already have two fantastic agencies working for me in Europe. Here's hoping that October's updates will be as positive!

Happy Fall, Everyone!
