Greeting September with a Smile

How quickly the summer has gone! I had a great time in Germany, singing Gershwin's Porgy and Bess. I made friends for life and got to spend a month singing Serena, one of my favorite roles. Here I am being silly on the bus with Dara Rahming, who sang Clara, and Alison Buchanan, my fellow Serena:

Despite the long rides, we always managed to have a great time...

I'm also happy to report that I received my first German review this summer! Here's an excerpt from the Mannheimer Morgen newspaper:

“Auch Indira Mahajans Bess ist gut, allerdings wird ihre Stimme in der Höhe eng und tendiert zu Schärfe, die Mary Elizabeth Williams als Serena zu vermeiden weiß. Sie kontrolliert ihren Sopran im Forte wie Piano und lässt sogar die hohe Kunst des An- und Abschwellens einzelner Töne erkennen.”

For those of you (like me) whose German is a little rusty, here's a rough translation:

Mary Elizabeth Williams as Serena knows how to avoid any sharpness in her top notes. Williams controls her Soprano in the forte as well as piano singing and shows high art in her ability to crecendo and decrescendo on individual tones.

Now that it's September and Autumn is just around the corner, it's time to look forward. The Fall is bringing lots of new opportunities! I'm in Europe through early October, making contacts, singing auditions, and working on my German and Italian language skills.

So...Auf wiedersehen! Ci vediamo! Looking forward to seeing you soon.

  1. Hi Mary Elizabeth, I have your Puccini aria on my desktop to listen to when I need some inspiration or a good cry. It is so beautiful. My Mom and I hope to hear you sing in person one day! Margaret
